Master's thesis in Software Development: From micro to macro - a decision framework for merging microservices
Challenging assignment with €1000 compensation or €500 + lease car or €600 + housing, professional guidance, training sessions, knowledge events, brainstorming with colleagues and 2 vacation days p/m.
We usually respond within three days
Microservices promise flexibility, but too many small services can overwhelm teams and architecture. In this thesis you will investigate and develop a decision framework to identify when services should be merged. The goal: to reduce complexity without sacrificing the benefits of modular design.
💡Areas of Interest: Software architecture, microservices, system optimization, DevOps
In many organizations, the software landscape consists of dozens of microservices, often managed by relatively small teams. This can lead to high maintenance efforts and architectural complexity, which may erode the benefits of a microservices architecture. While microservices offer flexibility and scalability, there is currently no structured method to determine when services have become too granular and should be consolidated.
The Assignment
Design and validate a decision framework to determine when microservices should be merged.
Research should cover:
- Relevant criteria (technical, organizational, functional) for determining optimal service size.
- Measurable indicators such as team capacity, change frequency, and dependency degree.
- Alignment with existing architecture principles and literature (e.g., Domain-Driven Design, team topologies).
Validate the framework through:
- Interviews with software architects and development teams.
- Application in a real-world microservices environment as a case study.
- Feedback from practitioners on usability and effectiveness.
